My 9 year-old daughter leaned over my shoulder as I started drafting this post so I asked her, "What do you think API stands for?" Without missing a beat she said, "All People Included."
The acronym actually stands for Application Programming Interface. But I like her answer better. After all, an API is the interface that allows your application to communicate with other applications'the more applications that interact with your application, the more popular it becomes, and the more people that are included.
SeeClickFix is an Open Data company, and provides an Open API that entities like Socrata can access to share our data via their Open Data portal'empowering users to create new, exciting ways to use and visualize the data. The City of Oakland is one of several municipalities using SeeClickFix alongside Socrata, and below is a cool data visualization provided this week by our friend Reid Serozi at Socrata.
At SeeClickFix, we also leverage our open API to integrate directly into existing municipal solutions in over 40 cities. We know and appreciate that every municipality is different and have invested time and resources in existing systems including: Oracle, Kana, Sungard, Cityworks, Vueworks, Lucity, Accela, Microsoft Dynamics, Infor/Hansen, Cartegraph, ViewPoint, Motorola, IBM, Chameleon and more.
For example, in Oakland, CA we are integrated into the City's Cityworks solution, which is used by the Public Works department. Through our API, service requests that are submitted through the City's branded SeeClickFix channels and/or our hosted CRM are automatically created within their Cityworks system as well. SeeClickFix then polls their internal solution at regular intervals for updates to requests, which are dynamically shared through the city's mobile app and web site.
Finally, our new reporting tool'Insight'allows for easy data analytics and visualization within SeeClickFix. Insight can sort data in hundreds of ways, empowering clients to create charts and graphs highlighting everything from trends over time to the volume of reports.
